At the time of publication Dvorák and Simrock had a disagreement. The main argument was that Dvorák wanted to write orchestral music and Simrock didn't want to publish that (expensive) music. One of the lines in the contract between both gentlemen was that new work would only be published by Simrock. Older work wouldn't sell as well as newer, Simrock thought. To get round the contract, Dvorák gave the Czech Suite an "old" opus number and asked Schlesinger for the publication of the work.
